Baking soda is a cheap and environmentally safe solution for many of our house cleaning
concerns, and here are just 7 of the ways that it can be used around the home:
- Helping your fridge smell better
The deodorising qualities of baking soda have long been known, and just by keeping a cup of baking soda in the back of your fridge, you can help minimise stubborn smells. The soda absorbs unwelcome odours, and when mixed with water to form a paste, it can also be used to clean food spills.
- Helping your shoes smell better
While shoes may not often be included in the average cleaning routine, there’s no doubt that a pair of sweaty, smelly shoes can quickly permeate a home and make it smell wholly unwelcoming. Simply sprinkle a cup of baking soda inside the culprit shoes, and let it sit there overnight. The smell will dissipate, and the bacteria caused by sweat will also be eradicated.
- Getting surfaces clean
Combine baking soda with white vinegar for the ultimate grease and grime busting solution. The fizzing reaction of the soda when mixed with vinegar, helps to break down and power through stubborn stains.
- Helping your entire home smell fresher
You can of course use baking soda to clean specific areas of your home, such as the fridge or kitchen counters, but when placed into small bowls and dotted around your home, it can help to absorb bad smells everywhere, and make your entire home smell fresher.
- Unblocking sinks and drains
Unclogging a bunged sink or drain can be a dirty, smelly task, but it’s made much easier when you use baking soda. Simply make a solution of baking soda, water and white vinegar and after pouring a full pot of hot water down the sink or drain, add the solution and let it fizz. Leave it for a few minutes before adding more hot water.
- Refreshing mattresses
Mattresses, while you may not notice them becoming smelly, are probably in need of freshening up from time to time, and you can easily do this using baking soda. Fill a cup of soda, sprinkle it all over the mattress, let it sit for a few hours, and then gently brush it off or use the vacuum cleaner.
- Eliminating bathroom mold
A solution of baking soda mixed with white vinegar and lukewarm water, will help you to eliminate many of the most stubborn mold and mildew stains in your bathroom. The paste can be safely used on tile grout, showers and bathtubs, and when used in conjunction with a brush, most stains can be gently scrubbed away.
Now that you know how effective baking soda can be when used for house cleaning, you have no excuse for a dirty home!
