A waterproofing membrane is in layman terms a layer of material that repels all water that lands on it. This safeguards any material below the membrane, preventing water from reaching it. Sheet Based Waterproofing Membranes
Sheet based waterproofing membranes are manufactured in sheet rolls. Being of standardised dimensions, sheet waterproofing membranes can be easily deployed with predictable results. To apply them, waterproofing contractors would unroll the sheet and cover the space in a straight line.
Once laid down, contractors can apply heat in order to have the adhesive stick the sheet to the surface. This is a relatively quick process, allowing the waterproofing contractor to quickly cover the surface with the membrane.
However, a drawback arises when analysing the application method. Since sheet waterproofing membranes are of standardised dimensions, there are limits to how it can be applied. For example, if you have an irregular corner or protruding object, it is difficult to apply a standardised sheet without have gaps under it.
Liquid Based Waterproofing Membranes
Liquid based waterproofing membranes come in containers, in liquid form. Like any other liquid, this means that this type of waterproofing membrane can conform to a variety of different surface shapes. As such, a liquid based waterproofing membrane is the perfect solution for covering and irregularly shaped surfaces or where vertical and horizontal surfaces meet.
To apply liquid waterproofing membranes, contractors need to use roller brushes or sprays. The challenge here is to ensure an even application on the surface. By having a uniform or consistent finish, your surface won’t have an obvious area of weakness.
Unfortunately, the flexibility of liquid membranes come with a price. That being the amount of time and expertise needed by contractors. Each part of your surface needs to be painstakingly covered with the membrane, thus requiring time and effort.
What Else Does Your Home Need
Waterproofing membranes are indeed a critical component for resisting water penetration in your home. However, alone, it is insufficient and will be quickly worn down. It is important that you ensure that your contractor builds in sufficient fall design and drainage systems. This helps to alleviate the pressure that water can place on your membrane via ponding.
