Understanding your roof pitch can often be important if you are looking at a quote for roofing repairs and roof replacements. As residential roofing contractors we wanted to better explain roofing pitch and why it can often contribute to the quote on your roofing!
Roof Pitch Explained
The pitch of your roof is the overall slope and angle that your roof is set up at. It’s the number of inches of vertical rise over the horizontal run of your roof. A 4/10 roof for example will rise every 4 inches for every 10 inches that it runs across your roof.
How Roof Pitch Affects Work
The contractor will likely discuss the idea of roof pitch before working on the quote with you. Contractors will have to take a measurement if you don’t have one previously accounted for in your roofing systems. If your roof is steeper than the initial measurement, this can often extend the overall price that they may have quoted you.
Steeper roofs often cost much more for roofing repairs and maintenance. This is because much of the work has to be staged on the ground and there’s an inherent risk towards the safety of workers. Steeper roofing can often cause some extra planning for aesthetic reasons. Based on the pitch of your roof, you may not qualify for the use of certain roofing materials as well. Composition shingles and the use of tile roofs are not recommended on a slope that sits below 3/12 for example.
Once you get an official roofing inspection and a slope for your roof, consider the option of recording it for later use with your roofing quotes and work. Contact us today to learn more about your roofing slope or to get a quote today!
