Tuckpointing Sydney, Know here why you need it and what are the terms

Do you wish to upgrade the brick structure appearance of your Sydney apartment? The best is to consider tuckpointing Sydney.

Why do you need tuckpointing?

Knowing the need to opt for tuckpointing is a must. Bricks in a structure provide durability for the exterior and interior walls, fireplaces, and chimneys. However, the mortar filling the brick joints starts deteriorating with time. If so, the tuckpointing Sydney is a requirement.

Enhancing the masonry appearance cosmetically is possible with tuckpointing. It is because it involves removing the deteriorated mortar portion and filling with new mortar the joints. However, while filling the new mortar, ensure it matches the brick color closely. Apply in contrasting color a thing line of putty down the joint center. This creates an illusion of being well-maintained. Tuckpointing applies to all the brick construction types but is found on historical brick homes only. It is because the homeowners wish to retain the original thin joints of the home.

Know the terms

If you are interested in safeguarding from mortar deterioration the worn bricks, give a new look with tuckpointing Sydney.  However, before proceeding with the repairs, learning these terms is helpful.

  • Pointing- It is a process of filling the joints using mortar during construction. It refers to the spaces between bricks forming mortar joints in a wall.
  • Repointing- It is a process of replacing from joints the old mortar with new mortar.
  • Tuckpointing- It is the process of eliminating from joints the old mortar and replacing it with closely matching brick color mortar. It also includes embedding the putty lines in contrasting color down the new mortar joint centers.

The terms “repointing” and “tuckpointing” are used alternatively, though they are aesthetically different as final products. Both involve replacing and removing deteriorating mortar and placing fresh mortar. However, there is an extra step in tuckpointing of applying contrasting lines in the joints centers, while repointing stops with replacing fresh mortar. Repointing offers a wavy and soft appearance to the new joints.

Some homeowners prefer tuckpointing as it offers a crisper visual illusion.  The bricks last for a century, but the mortar’s lifespan are not more than 25 to 30 years. Thus, it needs repointing or replacement during the brick building’s life, more than once. The fresh mortar blends with the brick’s color and does not come to notice until you examine the walls deeply. The fillets also are straight lines offering the wall a crisp look.
